Wrinkles are not the only indicator that the skin reveals about a person’s age. Studies from CE.R.I.E.S. (Epidermal and Sensory Research and Investigation Center), a department dedicated to skin related issues and facial appearance, discover that aside from the obvious wrinkles, people unconsciously interpret how old someone looks by the contrasting nature of facial features. Hundreds of face images ranging from 20 to 70 years old Caucasian woman were used in a study, and researchers found that as the age progressed, there are gradual changes in the color of the lips, eyes, and eyebrows, as well as the skin becomes darker. The red hue between the lips and the brightness of the surrounding skin decreases as the face ages. This contrast between the facial features and the surrounding skin leaves older faces to have less facial contrast than younger faces.
In another related study, researchers manipulated photographs of faces and showed them to hundreds of subjects. When facial contrasts were artificially increased in the photographs, with colors of the lips and eyes darkened and surrounding skin brightened, subjects perceived those images as being younger; while photographs with artificially decreased facial contrasts were perceived as older. Experts claim that bright lips, rosy cheeks, and luminescent skin are major psychological cue of youth, because of the increased facial contrast.
These studies may offer an explanation as to why makeup is applied a certain way, to increase the look of healthiness and beauty. Lipstick is worn to enhance the hue between the lips, which increase contrast from the surrounding skin. This may also explain why bright and clear skin is so sought after, because it provides greater contrast and gives a youthful appearance. So protect your skin from wrinkles and age spots by applying sunscreen for protection from the sun’s rays. Preserve the skins luminescence by keeping the skin clean and moist.
