Acne is common in young AND mature skin even long after puberty. Even small children can have acne.
Acne at any age can cause scars, dark spots, and other skin changes and should be managed by a physician as soon as possible. And yes, you did read that right, adult acne does exist. Adult acne is very common and should be treated as early as possible. In Houston, we offer great acne treatment options at the Mosaic Dermatology Houston. Acne can also be made worse by medications, including some birth control. Any medications you are on should be discussed with your physician. Acne has not been tied to "dirty" skin nor to "poor hygiene." However, using a daily gentle cleanser will help decrease natural oils produced by your skin that can promote acne. In some situations, patients with dry skin and acne may require alternate moisturizing face wash. Multiple over the counter acne wash products are available to try at your leisure. Some guidelines in selecting a cleanser can be found in our Knowledge Center under the Daily Skin Care tab. If you are not happy with your face wash product and have tried multiple options, you may benefit from a stronger prescription based face wash. This prescription can replace your over the counter regular face wash product. The best acne treatment for your skin can vary and a Dermatologist can help guide you. Let us help with your acne and other skin conditions. New acne medications are developed on a regular basis and we will discuss the most recent products based on your needs. We also offer teledermatology visits.
